Entry requirements and selection

The general entry requirements are:
1. a second-cycle/master level qualification
2. fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240
credits of which at least 60 credits awarded at second-cycle/master
level, or
3. the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other
way in Sweden or abroad

YIVO has extended the deadline for its 2016-2017 fellowships

YIVO’s annual fellowships in Eastern European and American Jewish History are now open for application. More information and the online application form can be found here: https://yivo.org/List-of-Fellowships

Each year, YIVO awards a series of Max Weinreich Center Research Fellowships for scholarly research in YIVO’s library and archival collections. These fellowships are intended primarily, but not exclusively, for graduate students and emerging scholars. Each fellowship requires a public lecture by the holder, to be held during or immediately after the fellow’s research period. Fellows are usually expected to spend

a period of four to six weeks in residence. This can be divided into several research trips, in consultation with YIVO staff.

The Fellowship Application will require the following information in pdf format: 1) Cover Letter 2) CV 3) 2-page project proposal, stating specifically which YIVO holdings are most relevant to the applicant’s project. 4) Two letters of recommendation.

Announcements regarding awards for the academic year beginning September 2016 will be made in February 2016. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2016.

Research Fellowships: Empires of Memory: The Cultural Politics of Historicity in Former Habsburg and Ottoman Cities

Postdoctoral and Doctoral Research Fellowships

A new Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, under the direction of Dr. Jeremy F. Walton, seeks to appoint postdoctoral and doctoral research fellows with outstanding academic records. We welcome applicants from a variety of fields in the social sciences and humanities, including Anthropology, History, Sociology, Geography, Urban Studies, Art History, Architectural History, and Comparative Literature, to work on a collaborative, five-year research project titled “Empires of Memory: The Cultural Politics of Historicity in Former Habsburg and Ottoman Cities.” The overarching objective of our project is to examine the forms, textures, and effects of imperial memories in relation to contemporary urban culture and politics in six cities: Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest, Sarajevo, Trieste, and Thessaloniki. Fellows will be expected to pursue their own individual projects in light of the following set of broad research questions: In what forums, genres, and media—narrative, visual, architectural, scholarly, etc.—are memories of Habsburg and Ottoman pasts articulated and elaborated? How do imperial memories, both positive and negative, inform and underwrite contemporary projects of urban preservation and transformation? In what ways and contexts do the imperial pasts of cities link up with national and EU-wide political debates and projects? What frictions do narratives of imperial pasts provoke in contemporary political life? Finally, how do memories of empire inform the politics of nationalism and the nation-state in these various cities? We especially encourage applications from scholars with linguistic expertise pertinent to one or more of our six sites. Awards will be made on the basis of scholarly excellence and research promise.

The Institute operates in English and is located in the scenic university town of Göttingen. All research fellows in residence are expected to devote the majority of their time to their individual research projects, take leadership in organizing international conferences and other academic events, publish their work in leading academic venues, and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. 

Postdoctoral fellows will be appointed for an initial period of two years, while doctoral fellows will be appointed for an initial period of three years. Compensation will be based on the German public service scale TVöD, level E 13 (50% for PhDs). The envisaged starting date is 1 May 2016.

The deadline for applications is 31 December 2015. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, writing sample, a brief research statement (approximately 1000 words), and the names and contact details of two academic referees. Applicants should also send a record of university diplomas and transcripts. Interviews for positions will occur via Skype in January 2016.

FUNDING: Wolfsonian-FIU Fellowship program

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University is a museum and research center that promotes the examination of modern visual and material culture. The focus of the Wolfsonian collection is on North American and European decorative arts, propaganda, architecture, and industrial and graphic design from the period 1885-1945. The United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are the countries most extensively represented. There are also smaller but significant holdings from a number of other countries, including Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, the former Soviet Union, and Hungary. The collection includes works on paper (including posters, prints and design drawings), furniture, paintings, sculpture, glass, textiles, ceramics, lighting and other appliances, and many other kinds of objects. The Wolfsonian’s library has approximately 50,000 rare books, periodicals, and ephemeral items.

Fellowships are intended to support full-time research, generally for a period of three to five weeks. The program is open to holders of master’s or doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and to others who have a significant record of professional achievement in relevant fields. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their project with the Fellowship Coordinator prior to submission to ensure the relevance of their proposals to the Wolfsonian’s collection. Leibniz Summer Fellowships - ZZF

The Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung / Centre for Contemporary
History Potsdam (ZZF) is pleased to invite applications for up to three
Leibniz Summer Fellowships "German and European History in the 20th
century" for the academic year 2016 to study German and European History in the 20th century. These two-month fellowships provide an opportunity to
pursue individual research in Germany while participating in the academic life in one of Germany's major historical research centres.

Founded in 1992, the ZZF covers a broad scope of Contemporary European
History with currently four research departments that reach from
"Communism and Society" and "Economic Thought and Practice" to "Regimes
of the Social Sphere" and "Contemporary History in the Age of Media and
Information". The ZZF library holds approx. 80,000 items and subscribes
to more than 100 periodicals. Since 2009 the ZZF is a full member of the
Leibniz-Association.

Applicants must have at least postdoctoral status with an outstanding
academic record. They are expected to pursue their own research. However
applicants whose interests relate to the research departments at the ZZF
will be preferred. Fellowship holders will be assigned to a research
department and asked to present their current project in a seminar or
colloquium.

The Leibniz Summer Fellowships carry a monthly grant of about 3.000 EUR.
The funding is supposed to cover all expenses including travel, housing,
and insurance. Fellows are expected to reside in Berlin or Potsdam for
two consecutive months between April and October 2016. The ZZF will
provide office space and other relevant facilities.
 
The application deadline is November 30, 2015. Decisions will be
announced not later than December 31, 2015. Applications can be in
English or German and must include
a letter of interest;
a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications);
a project proposal not exceeding 1.500 words;
a letter of recommendation (under separate cover).
