The Department of History at Central European University (CEU) offers students interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives on the history of Eurasia from the late medieval period to the present. It is recognized for its innovative approaches to research and teaching and as a center for outstanding research advancing comparative and transnational history on empirical and theoretical grounds. Our international faculty offers expertise that extends from the history of the Habsburg, Romanov, and Ottoman Empires to the comparative study of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century; from comparative religious studies to numerous aspects of cultural and intellectual history.
CEU is an English-language, graduate university located in Budapest and accredited both in Hungary and the United States. It is committed to attracting talented students and scholars from around the world and take prides in the fact that there is no dominant nationality on campus. Our student/faculty ratio is 6:1, allowing for small, discussion-based seminars and close guidance from faculty members.    

Scholarships and Application Deadline
The vast majority of our students receive generous financial aid packages, including full scholarships with stipends. Research grants are also available for all students regardless of nationality. The deadline to apply for admission with financial aid for the 2017-18 academic year is February 1, 2017.

Historical Cartography. A joint workshop of the Central European University & the Herder Institute

The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe in cooperation with the CEU History Department cordially invites you to a three-day-workshop on “history and cartography” in Marburg, Germany, from March 14 to 16, 2016. The Herder Institute houses a collection of over 40,000 topographic and thematic maps from the 16th to the 21st century, the majority of which depict today’s Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Baltic States and Western Russia.

CfP:Cities and Science: Urban History and the History of Science in the Study of Early Modern and Modern Europe

Budapest, 18-27 July 2016

This interdisciplinary summer course will bring together senior and junior
scholars of urban history, the history of science, and other related fields
in order to exchange ideas in developing new research agendas with an aim
to expand the “urban variable” in the history of science and to designate a
space for the sciences in urban history from the early modern period to the
early 20th century.


While the summer school will have a distinct interdisciplinary and
trans-epochal character, and encourages practitioners of other fields, such
as environmental studies, gender studies, literature, science and
technology studies, sociology, cultural or social anthropology, to apply,
potential participants should demonstrate historical awareness and a
general interest in history.

The course is directed by Markian Prokopovych and Katalin Straner, and the
faculty includes Bert De Munck, Karl Hall, László Kontler, Kapil Raj,
Ulrike Spring, and Roey Sweet.

STIP: Nationalism Studies MA program, CEU, Budapest

The Nationalism Studies Program at the Central European University (CEU) is accredited in the USA and in Hungary. Our students acquire an in-depth knowledge of the theories of nationalism as well as the main concepts and debates in ethnicity, ethnic conflict, self-determination, prejudice, minority protection, citizenship, multiculturalism and federalism. By the end of their studies, students understand the contextual nature of nationalist movements and rhetoric, and are able to contrast cases through comparative institutional, historical, empirical and/or discourse analysis. They understand the role of international actors in the development of nationalist movements and, conversely, the role of nationalist politics in international relations and intra-state ethnic conflict. 
We welcome applications from students with a BA diploma in any of the following fields: Sociology, Political Science, History, Legal Studies, Economics, International Studies, Foreign Language, Liberal Arts, Anthropology or Media Studies.
